Adam Helal, producer at Tileyard Studios in London (where The Salt-Stained Book was recorded) says he's never been busier. Listening to stories is a fundamental human pleasure and today the proliferation of smartphones, iPads, tablets etc etc makes listening possible whilst driving, exercising, cooking or lying cosily in bed at the end of the day waiting from sleep to come. According to Michele Cobb, president of the Audio Publishers Association (APA), the projections for 2013 are beginning to show that upwards of 20,000 audiobooks were produced last year." By 2012, the latest year for which sales figures are available, that number had risen to 13,255 titles-a nearly 200 percent increase in just three years. In 2009, for instance, just 4,602 audio titles were published. That’s partly due to the fact that audiobooks are today being pumped out in such increasingly large numbers. Dan Eldridge writing in Book Business magazine reported, "According to the Audio Publishers Association, 2012 saw six million more audiobooks sold than in the year previous. It would be encouraging to think that the ££ and $$ will come rolling in and the financial returns that are increasingly hard to earn via traditional print publication will be compensated by the audio edition. What I would like to outline, more prosaically, is the number of factors that have had to come together to make this happen.įirst, the motivation. I don't have to tell any writer what a thrilling - and indeed emotional - experience this has been. Keeping it brief, it's been little more than a month since my first novel, The Salt-Stained Book, went live on iTunes, Audible and Amazon in the UK and US. I've just received my first (small!) payment for audio book sales and I've also gained some insight into what the narrator, Anna Bentinck, thought of the process.
